The Inescapable Nature

Inspired by Matthew López’s The Legend of Georgia McBride

There is sometimes a swamp in the midnight hours

where jukebox negligees float to the surface.

I've seen the most beautiful people

slip in and out of them and sing songs

that could melt snow teeth in cities

hundreds of miles away from the hot music.

How we get through this life

is by sharpening our bite with tenderness

the way a barroom Elvis might wipe

the fresh blood from a scared kid's face

or an alcoholic might channel the ghost

of a Frenchwoman to solemnly surf

waves of broken memories. We follow

like stones across the perfumed water.

Matthew López’s The Legend of Georgia McBride is now playing at Torn Space Theater: https://www.tornspacetheater.com/home/
