The Story:

A research linguist, Brodie, receives genetic testing results: her unborn child may never be able to learn a language. Her girlfriend is unsympathetic; her genetic counselor is a rookie; her own uncompromising intellect betrays her. Her search for guidance takes her to unexpected places. Three actresses play multiple roles – including a gorilla – in Madeleine George’s irreverent exploration of one of our most fundamental questions: when does too much knowledge get in the way of our basic instincts?

Character Breakdown:

A - 60s, plays THE APE, DOROTHY, CLEVA, and THE BABY

  • ·       THE APE: a gorilla at the zoo, said to understand human language. Does not wear an ape suit. Physicality integral.

  • ·       DOROTHY: a mentor counselor; self-assured and good at her job.

  • ·       CLEVA: believed to be one of the last speakers of her native language. Hired by BRODIE to document the language. Headstrong but fragile.

B - early 40s, plays BRODIE

  • ·       BRODIE: a professor and linguist, specializing in dead and dying languages. A lesbian who underwent treatments to become pregnant. Confident in her convictions.

C - mid to late 20s, plays THE ZOOGOERS, RHIANNON, EVELYN, DRE, and GLORIA

  • ·       THE ZOOGOERS: an ever-changing group of people observing THE APE. Vocal nuance a must.

  • ·       RHIANNON: a genetic counselor. New to the job, eager and inexperienced.

  • ·       DRE: a tomboy and grad student. BRODIE is her advisor and her lover.

  • ·       GLORIA: an ultrasound technician; sweet and empathetic.

*All characters identify as women; can be played by women, non-binary, or gender non-conforming actors.
