Writers Who Die in the Dark

By JUSTIN KARCHER

All across America there are writers wandering lost through the woods at night

they can’t see anything they’re tripping over rocks they’re tripping over the bodies of other writers

sometimes they hear a voice in the darkness “Give me words I’ll give you light”

so they reach down feel around for anything that sings like a knife twigs or animal bones

then they carve poems or lyrics into their bodies into their blood

sometimes the voice in the darkness says, “ I can use this I’ll be in touch

about the light” so the writers wait for a sun that never rises
